Pergola, in the heart of the Cesano Valley, was founded in 1234 as a free commune at the initiative of Gubbio. Over the centuries, it came under the rule of the Malatesta, Montefeltro, and Della Rovere families, and finally the Papal States, after which it obtained the status of a town in 1752.
